Poul Henningsen, a famous Danish author, architect and critic was born in 1894 in Copenhagen. He never took any professional degree as an architect, but deliberates at The Technical School at Frederiksberg. He became Denmark's first expert in lighting theory. He typically knew for his design of the PH lamp.
Poul Henningsen Philosophy
Poul Henningsen was one of the most important figures of the cultural life of Denmark. His sharp wit, intelligence, and artistic vision reflect on every single work he has designed during his lifetime. He was very passionate about lighting and its theory.
He once said:
"Furniture, style carpets, everything in the home is unimportant compared to the positioning of the lighting. It doesn't cost money to light a room correctly, but it does require culture."
Poul Henningsen name is considered synonymous to "Danish lighting design". His original work speaks all about the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction.
All the way through his journey, he produced wide array of light fixtures and lighting techniques that earned him a reputation as a true master of his craft.
According to him:
"It has always been the idea that the PH-lamp should be the lamp for the home. Due to its qualities and its modern appearance it had to be accepted first in offices and public buildings, but it is constructed with the most difficult and noble task in mind: lighting in the home. The aim is to beautify the home and the who live there, to make the evening restful and relaxing"
PH lamps were the results of his ten year works. Since its creation the chair has been showcase till date and consider as one of the finest examples of the perfect lamp fitting in regards to style, and the softening of light.
