George Nelson is a noted American industrial designer, and one of the founders of American Modernism. He was born on May 29, 1908 in Hartford, Connecticut. He studied at Hartford Public High school in 1924 and then attended Yale University. He was part of a generation of architects that found too few projects and turned successfully toward product, graphic and interior design.
He once said:
"There have been proposals to 'improve' design by converting into a kind of science. Those with even a smattering of recent history will remember that the same attempts were made in psychology and sociology. I suspect that such efforts are not so much an attempt to improve, but rather to get a free ride on the enormous prestige science enjoys. Design is not science and it never will be."
Some of his noticeable works are as follows:
- Slat Bench
- Ball clock
- Rosewood Group
- Executive Office Group
- Steel-frame Group
- Nelson End Table (and low coffee table)
- Flying Duck Chair
- Coconut Chair
- Thin Edge Cases
- Kangaroo Chair
- Comprehensive Storage System (CSS)
- Action Office
- Sling Sofa
